These coins were all struck by hand in different locations throughout the Greek Empire so every one is different then the next. Just think who could have held these coins a Greek soldier or maybe even Alexander The Great or Ptolemy. These coins have been found Buried and most of these coins will date from 700 BC - 250 AD. Because there were no banks at the time, many of these coins were buried for safe keeping by their owners. Many hoards were buried by Greek, before they went off to battle. However, many of the soldiers did not return and thus their money were left in the ground only to be discovered millenniums later by archeologists or people using metal detectors. An Outline of Ancient Greek Coins by Zander H. Klawans-This is an excellent book for the beginner and is full of great information on the early coin stamping process and a lot of the early through later greek coins. Covers alot of the greek coins and the cities where they were coined contains great information and is very inexpenive. Roman Coins and Their Values by David Sear - This is the best book for an ancient coin collector at any level. Not only does this book contain historical information on several thousand ancient coins, it also contains a value guide of the several thousand ancient coins as well.
