In 1776, the Signers of the Declaration of Independence established a Nation unique in the annals of mankind. The first Nation ever composed of "Free and Independent States," permanently united in a common cause. Thirteen years later, in preparing a Constitution for these United States, our Founding Fathers reemphasized their faith in that principle of strength through unity. Drawing upon the individual strengths of each of our States, the Nation as a whole has prospered. It has, indeed, become the greatest nation in the world today. In tribute to this heritage of strength through unity, our Country's Bicentennial celebrations will--by Presidential direction--be "as wide as America's land and as richly diverse as its people." So it is with The Fifty-State Bicentennial Medal Collection. Created by fifty different artists from fifty different States, these medals reflect the special character of each of our States. The collection as a whole is representative of the variety and richness of the American way of life. Every medal in this collection is an award-winning work of art, bearing a design selected by distinguished citizens of the State whose heritage it symbolizes. The fifty separate judging panels spent thousands of hours studying the entries of more than 13,000 artists. The first prize winner is each State received an award of $5000. By any measure, this was the largest and most exciting art competition in history. Since the winning artist in each State is or has been a citizens of that State. The Fifty-State Bicentennial Medal Collection is unique in yet another sense. These medals capture the spirit of America through American eyes. They are truly medals "...of the people, by the people, and for the people..."That is especially significant as we prepare to celebrate America's Bicentennial.
