Scanning this ONE DOLLAR bill from 1863 ALABAMA reveals interesting details. The vignette of the unidentified man is perhaps meant to represent the iconic southern gentleman. Under the large "1" we find the engraver's name: J.T.Patterson and Co. The scroll below the "1" and under the tree says "Map of Alabama" although it shows just two lines representing perhaps rivers. In the vignette of the capital we find the bill's serial number and the notation of "1st series.' Another interesting point, apparently one could redeem these bills for "Treasury Notes" only in amounts of twenty dollars or more. This bill has a prominant center fold since it was placed in a small wallet since perhaps the 1860's. It has light staining in some spots. The bottom right corner is slightly turned. No rips or rerpairs. The bill was printed on very thin onion skin paper and the back is blank. |
