The discovery of the main gold reef in
1886 in the Johannesburg area changed the history of South Africa. No
other event in the 20th century had such a great impact on the
political and economic history of South Africa. The shimmering beauty of
pure gold has captivated the country.
It was during this golden era in
Johannesburg that President Paul Kruger realized that South Africa needed
its own coinage system. The gold Kruger pounds were introduced in 1892 and
the same obverse design appear on the current Krugerrand.
The discovery of gold, more than a
hundred years ago, created a golden opportunity for all. In the new South
Africa, Johannesburg is referred to as EGOLI, a traditional African word
meaning, "place of gold".
The Krugerrand is one of the few South
African brand names that appears on the top 300 international branding
list and most people associate Johannesburg gold and the Krugerrand with
South Africa.
This idea culminated in 1967 when the
South African Mint introduced the handsome new coin of 1-ounce troy fine
gold and the first Krugerrand was struck at the South African Mint on 3
July 1967.
The design of the Krugerrand was based
on historical coins of South Africa. The obverse depicts the bust of
President Paul Kruger who was President of the ZAR (the previous Transvaal
province of South Africa ? now Gauteng) when the Witwatersrand gold was
discovered in 1886. The design on the reverse depicts a prancing
springbok, a well-known South African symbol.
The reverse was originally designed and
engraved by Coert Steynberg (CLS) a famous South African sculptor.
The same design was used on the reverse
of the £1 and £½ and later R2 and R1 gold coins from 1952 to 1982. As
this design was used on the original gold coins, it was decided to
continue this design of the new Krugerrand.
The name Krugerrand was derived from
KRUGER (President Paul Kruger) and RAND the monetary unit of South Africa.
The Rand is associated with the area called Witwatersrand, "The ridge
of white water" an important gold producing area.
The alloys of the Krugerrand were
selected at 22 carat or 916,7 gold with the balance in copper, the
traditional alloy for gold coins.
