The name came from combining the number two with the word "Loonie", which is the accepted name of the Canadian $1.00 coin. The name was so widely accepted that in 2006 The Royal Canadian Mint acquired the rights to the name. It is the First Canadian bi-mettalic circulation coin, that consistantly bears its issue date on the Obverse. It is also the only coin to have "ELIZABETH II - D.G. REGINA" in a different typeface.
