PENN CENTRAL
RAILROAD
This Very Short-Lived Railroad (1968-1976) can best be described as the result of the Law of Unintended Consequences: a variation of Murphy's Law which states
"Anything than CAN go wrong WILL go wrong!"
A classic example of this less well-known law is the creation of a Bypass on the Interstate. Intended to lessen traffic problems it usually instead creates them because new housing developments sprout up all around it.
Don't we all just know about THAT one!
Here the Cause was President Eisenhower's signature on the Federal Highway Act of 1956 which created a Mushroom-like Growth of the Four-Lane Highway.
The Unintended Consequence was the near strangulation of the Railroad System in the Northeast. Not from Over-crowding but from Under-crowding.
Penn Central was an attempt - if I may switch metaphors - to stem the bleeding. The venerable Pennsylvania and the New York Central were merged in 1968 and the New York New Haven & Hartford added one year later.
One year after that - the fix obviously didn't take - Penn Central declared Bankruptcy: the Largest in the US until then! So Amtrak was created and finally Conrail in 1976. After that it got even messier but I'll spare you the details.
So this Certificate is a Choice Piece of History! I am offering FOUR MORE Different and Related ones.

The Vignette is a very nice Art-Deco rendition of Mercury - with his Winged Feet and Helmet - holding his Icon (a Caduceus) in one hand and in the other ..... your guess is as good as mine: a Discus...? a Wheel...? a CD on how to improve oneself...?
