North Carolina, series of April 4, 1748, 40 Shillings, PMG certified and graded (net) VG-10. The incredibly small emission of 2,000 each for notes of this series makes it a popular and sought after item by NC specialists as well as type collectors of all Colonial paper. Perhaps, the only pre-1750 Colonial note with this small an emission you will ever be able to buy for under multiple thousands of dollars! Notes of this series are infamous for their heavy contemporary circulation and resultant low collector grades today. The highest PMG has graded a 40 Shilling note of this series has been Fine-15 (2 examples), with one example at Fine-12 and two more at VG-10, of which this is one. As with most Colonial and Continental Currency, prices have fluctuated wildly over the years. That having been said, however, it should be noted that in his 1976 edition of Early Paper Money of America, author Eric Neuman listed this entire series as either unpriced or priced only in "FAIR" condition.
