Newfoundland is a large island province of Canada, located 1500 miles North East of Boston. It's capital St John's is the oldest city in the Western Hemisphere, founded in 1497, and is located closer to Ireland, than it is Montreal. Newfoundland was a Crown colony of Great Britain, until it joined the Canadian Confederation in 1949. Newfoundland has it's own time zone, running 1 and 1/2 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, due to it's location sticking out in the North Atlantic Ocean. Newfoundland had it's own coins minted, from 1865 through 1947. Newfoundland coinage was heavily circulated, and is normally found very worn as a result, since TWO DIFFERENT bank failures within a 25 year period TWICE rendered ALL paper money WORTHLESS. Understandably, nobody trusted paper money after that. This COIN is a NICE, VERY SCARCE, 1874 Silver 50 Cent that has NO PROBLEMS- just honest even wear, with GOOD DETAIL REMAINING. This 50 cent was one of the VERY FIRST COINS minted for Newfoundland, and it has a VERY LOW MINTAGE of ONLY 80,000. How many of these coins still SURVIVE today, in ANY CONDITION???
