We Welcome Emperor Constans To My Coin Altar...
The Obverse: DN CONSTANS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped and cuirassed bust left, holding globe
The Reverse: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Emperor holding spear and dragging barbarian from hut under a tree, CONSA* in exergue
RIC 88, VIII AE Centenionolis Struck 348-351 A.D. at the Constaninople mint 21mm 4.0g
Nice larger-sized coin, an authentic ancient Roman Centenionolis. This coin is bronze, and is 21mm across. It weighs in at exactly four grams. There is a good bust on the front. The reverse is interesting, showing Emperor Constans dragging a barbarian from out of a hut under a tree. Fantastic picture, and a startling image no matter which side of the Emperor's arm you happen to be on. The Constantinople mintmark is clear at the bottom of the coin as well.
Ah....Constantinople!!
I view ancient coins as a link to remembering our past. Roman coins represent a government which shaped and molded this world for centuries, and understanding Rome, somehow, allows me to better understand the world I live in today. When I think of Roman history, of King Charlemagne, Emperor Constantine, Julius Caesar, Constans, the whole lot of them, I cannot help but think of current affairs, of disputes still being settled by the descendants of the very people who held these coins. These ancient relics are very topical and very personal for me, as I am sure they are in so many ways for you as well. Just touching these coins, examining their finer details and seeing the images displayed on their ancient surfaces, is enough to send me dreaming just like old Plato or Socrates. Please feel welcome inside my little dreamland...
