Confederate Cent An order to make cents for the confederacy was placed with Mr. Robert Lovett Jr., and engraver and die-maker of Philadelphia, through a jewelry firm of that city. Fearing arrest by the United States Government for giving assistance to the enemy, Mr. Lovett decided not to deliver the coins to the Confederate Government and hid the coins and dies in his cellar.The original dies were later purchased by Capt. John Haseltine who made restrikes from the dies. In 1960, the dies were copied and additional pieces made by Robert Bashlow.
