Information and bibliography:
This nice solid silver medal was engraved by Jean-Baptiste Daniel-Dupuis (1849-1899) . He was the son of a painter and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris when only 16 years old. First he studied painting, later sculpture. In 1868 Dupuis competed for the Prix de Rome for which he received a second prize award. At the age of 19, he became professor for Drawing at the Ecole Municipale de Paris. Dupuis received the Grand Prix de Rome in 1872, a third-class medal at the Salon of 1877 and numerous other awards at exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Antwerp. He was created Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1898. Daniel-Dupuis' career ended prematurely in November 1899, when he was murdered by his deranged wife as he lay asleep. Some if his medals have been issued after his death
This medal was one of the last one (maybe the last one..) which was engraved by Daniel-Dupuis. It was struck to commemorate the Year 1900 and, later, the entry in the 20th Century. Five years later, in 1905 the big and famous store "Le Louvre" in Paris used this die to commemorate its 50th Anniversary . Silver medals like this one were only Awarded to the best employees.
Reference: plate Nr.46 " Médailles de Récompenses de la Monnaie de Paris " (You'll find the plate of this reference book with the pictures of this medal).
Comment: This solid silver medal is a beautiful numismatic item, in the complete meaning! It's in a very beautiful condition with a light silvered patina (there is a very light dent at 1:00/Obv.). On the edge : " Argent" (silver) and an edge mark: a " cornucopia". This mark indicates this medal was struck after 1880 .This medal is NOT A RESTRIKE and it was struck in 1905, for the 50th Anniversary of the Louvre Store. It is still in its original box with the name of the Awarded: Mrs Marin , (from the store "Hats for Children"! ). Such medals are very RARE when struck in silver. est. $200/250 & NO RESERVE
