By the end of the twelfth century A.D., Mohammad Ibn Sam A.K.A. Muhammad of Ghur achieved domination of northern India from the ruins of the Ghaznavid Empire. He was a Ghorid Turk and the founder of the line of Delhi sultans— a succession of Muslim dynasties that ruled until 1526 A.D. Under the rule of the sultans, the capitol city of Delhi’s commerce and industry flourished in what became one of the largest cities in the Islamic world at the time.
After the Ghorids, succeding sultans came from other Islamic dynasties including the Tughluqs, the Sayyids from Arabia and Afghanis of the Lodi tribe.
The sultans were excellent warriors. Better horses contributed to the success of mobile tactics, and they also made better use of metal for weapons, armor, and stirrups than did most of their adversaries. The Delhi sultans were successful in repulsing even the armies of the powerful Mongol Empire
The majority of the sultans enjoyed easy, pleasant lives as most of the tasks of governing were left to slaves. As practiced in eastern Muslim polities of this period, the institution of slavery provided well-trained and loyal military followers (the mamluks) for important political figures. Slave status was honorable and was a principal avenue to wealth and high position for talented individuals. Indeed a number of former slaves themselves rose to the rank of sultans in this period.
This famous coin was issued during the reign of Mohammed b. Tughlak (1325-1331). Soon after achieving power, this tyrannical ruler squandered the treasury, replaced the previous silver coinage with very unpopular coins made of mostly copper alloy and “forced” it on this populace.
This coin is a genuine antiquity minted during the dynasty of the sultans of Delhi in northern India in the 14th century A.D. During the reign of Mohammed b. Tughlak, these predominantly copper coins were issued to the great displeasure of the people of the county who were accustomed to silver coins of higher quality.
