In the first half of the 7th century BC Greek colonists from Chios founded the city of Maronia on the southwest slope of Ismaros, close to the contemporary "St. Charalambus" location. According to ancient lore, its founder was Maron, priest of Apollo in the sacred grove of Ismara. In the 5th century BC, Maroneia was a fully organized and self-governed city-state. Its harbor was a commercial and transit center for the products of the area, mainly wheat, wine and oil. Its coins dated back to the end of the 6th century BC point to the development not only of economy, but also of civilization. During Xerxes' expedition against Greece, Maroneia yielded to the Persians (513 BC), but was soon liberated by the Greeks. In 478 BC it became a member of the Athenian Alliance. In 413 BC it paid tribute in the form of taxes to the kingdom of Odryssos and became an independent state.
During the 4th century BC it was a democracy and in 350 BC it yields to the Macedonians, and circulation of its own golden and silver coins ceases. During the period of Alexanders the Great successors, the Ptolemys of Egypt, Philip V King of Macedonia and Antiochus VII King of Syria rule the city. In 189 BC the Romans liberate Maroneia from the Antiochian garrison.
The economy of Maroneia that has suffered greatly from the constant changes and wars recovers with the circulation of "tetra drachmas" (four-drachmas) in 116 BC, which will become together with those of Thasos the dominant currency in the Balkans. Thus, Maroneia will win the battle for commercial and financial dominance in the Balkans over the cities of Abdera and Ainos.
During the Roman dominion of Greece (2nd century BC) the city resigns itself to the "Pax Romana" and the worship of the Egyptian Gods as well as the goddess Rome is added to the worship of the Greek Pantheon.
In the Byzantine age, following the death of Theodosius the Great (395 AD) the city belonged to the Thracian administration, it was a diocese and after 451 AD it was proclaimed an autocephalous archdiocese.
The city's prosperity continued throughout the last Byzantine times.
