4 BANK OF CANADA $1.00 CENTENNIAL NOTES ISSUE 1967
$1.00 BANK OF CANADA Centennial Issue of 1967 described as follows: 2 with serial numbers: GP0163043-GP4052966. Special $1 notes were issued in 1967 to commemorate the centennial of Confederation. The face of the note resembles that of the 1954 $1 issue, except for the maple leaf centennial symbol at the left and references to the centennial along the top and bottom. The back vignette portrays the original Centre Block of the Parliament buildings, which was destroyed by fire in 1916. The some vignette was used on the face of the 1872 $100 Dominion note. Restoration of the original die was done by Gordon Yorke. He also re-engraved the sky and added landscaping to both sides of the building and to the foreground. Deliveries of the 1954 $1 notes to the chartered banks were suspended through 1967, and the commemorative notes were distributed exclusively. A special collector's issue was prepared with the dates "1867 1967" replacing the serial numbers. These notes were available only from the Bank of Canada but soon began to enter circulation. Because they were hoarded by the public, these special notes remain very common, while the regular serial number notes have to a greater extent disappeared. Both bank note companies were involved in the printing of Centennial notes but their imprints were omitted. The Canadian Bank Note Co. printed the notes in group "0", series L, M, N, 0, P, R and S, and the British American Bank Note Co. printed the notes in group "P", series F, G, H, J, K, L and M. The serial numbers of these notes conform to gaps in the numbering of the 1954 $1 notes which occurred between 1966 and 1968. These circulated notes are in nice condition considering their age. I won't bother to grade them for you as I'm not a professional. Please judge from the scanned image below. The ones with serial numbers have a few folds in them and the ones without numbers are in better condition. Other then that they make wonderful collectables.
