This year the Westward Journey Nickel Series features a new obverse of jefferson and the "Ocean in View" this set includes six nickels, offering both nickel designs for 2005.Two uncirculated Denver "D" mint mark nickels, and two proof San Francisco "S" protective lens. The obverse design for the 2005 nickels bears for the first time in 67 years, a new likeness of "Liberty" inscription on the coin is based upon Jefferson's own handwriting. The design is base sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, completed in 1789. The design was made age-appropriate to Stuart and Rembrandt Peale. The first of two new reverses on the 2005-dated nickel features the American bison, recognizing Lewis ans Clark expedition. Expedition journals described the buffalo, and it was an animal. The second new reverse features a scene of western waters and an inscription reflecting an November 7, 1805. The design visually depicts the expedition's exultation on believing they months of arduous travel. |
