These are the last coins issued by the Vatican with the Lire denomination. In 2002 the Vatican changed to the Euro along with Italy, this change in denomination created an incredible demand for the first Vatican Euro Sets. They are no longer available from alot of major outlets and suppliers. This last set of Lira coins from the Vatican is the matching set to the first set of the Vatican's new Euros. Each coin depicts a different pope on the obverse, with John Paul II on the 1000 Lire to Pius XII (who became Pope in 1939) on the 50 Lire. The coins range from 18mm to 26mm in diameter and include a 1000,500,200,100 and 50 Lire denominations. These coins are in uncirculated condition. The coins are made from brass, stainless steel and bimetal. The obverse features one of Giovanni Paolo II, Giovanni Paolo I, Paolo VI, Giovanni XXIII and Pio XII. The reverse is the Pope's Coat of Arms, MMI (date 2001) and XXII (23rd year of John Paul II). As an independent State, Vatican City has issued coins since the 1600's. This set of coins marks the end of an era, the last coins of the Vatican to be denominated in Lire. 5-coins come with certificate of authenticity. The state of the Vatican City is recognized by many nations as an independent sovereign state under the jurisdiction of the Pope, even to the extent of embassadorial exchange. Legal tender coins. |
