The new circulating dollar coin was released in July 1987 and replaces the Nickel dollar.
This special proof edition commemorates teh first year of issue. The design is the work of Robert Ralph Carmichael of Ontario and depicts a Common Loon. Obverse designer was A. Machin.

The coin is housed in a purple velvet box, COA, encapsulated in plactic air-tite, with a white cardboard sleeve. This coin comes just as it came from Royal Canadian Mint.
