1987 Canadian Special Proof Dollar Commemorates the First Year of Issue Common Loon The new circulating dollar coin was released in July 1987 and replaces the Nickel dollar. This special proof edition commemorates teh first year of issue. The design is the work of Robert Ralph Carmichael of Ontario and depicts a Common Loon. Obverse designer was A. Machin. Pure Nickel electroplated with bronze, Golden coloured, 11 sided (bendecagonal) Diameter: 26.5mm Weight: 7.0g Thickness: 2.0mm Mintage 178,120 Finish Proof The coin is housed in a purple velvet box, COA, encapsulated in plactic air-tite, with a white cardboard sleeve.
