Minted in 1863 during the height of the American Civil War, these tokens were patterned after the U.S. small cent, and were probably struck on the same copper planchets. Their production was a means to boost support for the war effort, and a way to instill patriotic feelings in the north. This piece was struck the same year the large battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg were fought. This token looks in uncirculated condition with dark-brown toning. An attractive and historical piece! |
