The coin is described on its Certificate of Authenticity as being "nearly full detail enhanced by the 'shipwreck effect' from lying undisturbed in its original keg for 138 years." The SS Republic sank in a Hurricane on October 25, 1865 and came to rest on the sea floor some 1,700ft underwater in the Atlantic Ocean off Georgia. The wreck was discovered in August 2003 by Odyssey Marine Exploration. Each coin was picked up individually by an ROV named ZEUS. The coin was then conserved and encased by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).This coin comes in a beautiful wood presentation box with a metal depiction of the SS Republic on top. Inside you will find the NGC certified and encased coin, a informational booklet, a National Geographic DVD program about the SS Republic, and the Certificate of Authenticity.Here is your chance to own a piece of United States history!
